This session will discuss the goals of Palliative Wound Management. Our approach to wound care is less aggressive, and we encounter many challenges. We'll discuss those challenges, which include: wound odor, excessive bleeding, exudate, necrotic tissue, pain, periwound breakdown, itching, and body image and caregiver skills. We'll learn about some of the wounds encountered in palliative care such as Kennedy Terminal Ulcer, Marjolin, Kaposi Sarcoma, fungating wounds, pressure ulcers, and fistulas.

- Outline the major goals of palliative wound management.
- Describe various types of wounds and complications encountered in palliative wound management.
- Identify interventions and products for wound treatment as they relate to palliative wound management.

This session is designed to provide practical information for wound care therapists who are occasionally asked to assist in providing leech therapy for post-surgical flaps and reattached appendages that are failing due to venous congestion. General anatomy, biology will be covered, along with clinical insights concerning appropriate use and potential complications. The class will focus on practical pointers about how to handle the leeches. A demonstration is planned, provided leeches can be obtained in time.

- List the indications for leech therapy
- List at least 2 complications of leech therapy
- Describe how to tell the difference between the front and back ends of a leech.
- Describe at least 3 techniques to optimize leech attachment.
