Description:
The goal of this course is to help the interdisciplinary team that works closely with the patient to implement prevention measures on admission in any treatment setting including the home. Those at the bedside will be able to identify skin conditions to differentiate the skin issues that can be directly associated with perspiration and or urine, feces, or dual incontinence. These bedside care givers will be better prepared to initiate a treatment plan based on the skin presentation of the patient, thus alleviating increased pain and prolonged treatment needs for the patient.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Evaluate the patient on admission for prevention of skin disorders related to MASD/incontinence.
- Create an easily implemented standing treatment plan based on the patient’s skin prevention needs.
- Relate the difference of MASD skin issues and its potential evolution to pressure injuries based on the MDS regulations.
- Identify ways to implement a skin prevention team within your facility or with the patient’s family or caregiver in the home.

This 1-hour presentation will discuss and ostomy appliance preparation and placement using present day ostomy supplies. Focus on newer accessory products and tools to achieve a leak proof seal and maintain peristomal skin health.

- Recognize different styles of convex products.
- Identify types of peristomal planes that may benefit from convexity.
- Name three of the characteristics of convexity as defined by the international consensus panel.
- Identify two accessory products that can be applied to help create an individualized custom convex appliance.
